Chris Lea Posted 30th November 2017

Thanks so much to everyone who came to the lunch on Sunday and made it such a success. Please take a look at the photo gallery - thanks to John Smith for the pics (and Graham Barker for the ones of John). Here's our BAR winner, Chris Lea, receiving the Ethel Scothern Cup from Richard Haigh.

Chesterfield Coureurs hc, Beeley Moor, Sunday 15th October

Paul Heggie Posted 17th October 2017

The final event in the North Midlands TT series (hill climb comp) and as usual a top class field, featuring Adam Kenway and Lizzy Banks plus the lads from B38/Underpin racing. Conditons were ok (which equals good for Beeley) and records tumbled. Chris Myhill, having a great hc season, broke his own vets record with a stunning 9.32.8. Amazing! This is a tough climb, well done all.

  • 13th / 1st vet - Chris Myhill 9.32.8
  • 38th / 10th vet - Trevor Mayne 10.35.8
  • 58th / 19th vet - Bob Cuff 13.17.0
  • 62nd / 22nd vet - Paul Heggie 14.17.9 (pictured)

RTTC Closed Circuit TT Championships, Sunday 15th October

Keith and Daryl Posted 16th October 2017

Keith Ainsworth and Daryl May headed down to Thruxton for the strange world of the closed circuit champs. I'm not sure anyone really understands these - 5 laps of a racing circuit at an odd time of year... Anyway both did ok, placing well in their respective age groups and can now finally fully embrace the social season!

  • 32nd / 2nd in age group - Keith Ainsworth 24.56
  • 72nd / 6th in age group - Daryl May 26.22

Tickhill Velo hc, Bib Lane, Sunday 8th October

Bob and Alex Posted 10th October 2017

Bob Cuff continued his first year of hill climbs (after Bradfield, Pea Royd, Hardwick and Monsal) and he's improving with every one. Bob and Alex Deck were the only North Mids vets riding this (where were you all?). It was a lovely event, nice weather, well organised, great club ethos, a good climb and location, rising out of the village of Brookhouse. In the end only 2/10 of a second separated us, Bob finishing 5th vet with 1.36.9 and Alex 2nd woman with 1.37.1. Good fun.

Rutland CC hc, Mam Nick, Saturday 7th October

Alex Posted 10th October 2017

Alex Deck was the only North Mids vet to enter this (Everyone else had more sense). It was very very painful. I wanted to turn around and go home after about 100 yards but ploughed on, primarily because it was a Rutland event and I didn't want to let the side down. It was worth it in the end as I got 3rd woman, behind two much younger riders, and also got a pb of 8.58.3. Never again though.

VTTA East Anglia 30, E2/30C, Saturday 7th October

Keith and Joe Posted 10th October 2017

Keith Ainsworth, Joe Le Sage and Richard Sheldrake headed down to the EC2/30C course for the potentially fast Leo 30. And so it was, with fantastic results for all: Keith and Joe both broke their club records and Keith's time is also a North Mids record, obliterating THREE existing ones, including Kev Dawson's 59-57 from 2013. That's quite a scalp Keith. And just to finish off, it's also a National age record. What a ride.

  • 10th Keith Ainsworth 59.45 (+24.32) (Sheffrec club record)
  • 26th Joe Le Sage 1-02.43 (+17.56) (Rutland record)
  • 39th Andy Newham 1-04.32
  • 45th Richard Sheldrake 1-05.38

Sheffrec CC hc, Monsal Head, Sunday 1st October

Bob Posted 3rd October 2017

Bob Cuff was the ONLY North Mids VTTA member brave enough to take on this evil climb, and did a brilliant ride. Bob's Garmin said 1.50, and he certainly flew up the last section. The timekeeper, however, had him down as 2.11, which frankly seems very unlikely, so we're going to sit on the fence on that one. Well done Bob.

VTTA North Midlands (that's us!) 10, O10/16, Saturday 30th September

Keith, Alex, Darryl and Ann Posted 3rd October 2017

Huge thanks to Craig Devonshire for putting this event on. This was the last of 7 events he's run this year for the VTTA and Bolsover & District CC, and he's done a great job. Thanks to all the marshals and helpers too - much appreciated by the riders. This was a particularly exciting event as it was the final race in the North Mids Time Trial series standard (ie flattish) carriageway competition. It was neck and neck in both the men's and women's so it really did come down to the line in a very exciting finish and we had to do some serious maths afterwards to check who'd won.

Scores on the doors (for the 10) were:

  • 3rd Keith Ainsworth 21.06 1st on standard (+6.20) (top right)
  • 4th Darryl Wall 21.30 (middle right)
  • 8th Joe Le Sage 21.59
  • 10th Trevor Mayne 22.15
  • 15th Daryl May 23.02
  • 16th Chris Lea 23.16
  • 20th Alex Deck (1st woman & course record) 24.22 (top right)
  • 22nd Ann Walsham (2nd woman) 24.48 (bottom right)
  • 25th Richard Lunt 25.22 (tbc)
  • 28th Janice Mcwilliam 25.48
  • 29th Alix Archer 26.07
  • 32nd Jamie Flaxman 27.11
  • 34th John Smith 28.23
  • 36th Alan Sides 29.32

Stocksbridge CC hill climb double, Sunday 24th September

Trev and Bob Posted 25th September 2017

A day of pain in Stocksbridge, with New Mill Bank at 10am followed by the dreaded Pea Royd at 2pm. Trevor Mayne (left) rode New Mill Bank and was 2nd vet with 3.22.6. Bob Cuff (right) went for Pea Royd and finished with 3-58.7 - good effort guys. Photos by Rich Witney.

Welsh National 50, R50/1B, Sunday 24th September

Keith Posted 25th September 2017

Keith Ainsworth likes his 2-race-weekends and after an excellent 3rd at Hatfield on Saturday afternoon nipped off down to South Wales for the 8am start of the Welsh National 50. Worth the trip as he came 4th (actual time) with a new North Mids age record of 1-47.31, only 25s behind Victor Chetta who is no slouch. He beat him on standard though, coming first with a plus of 12.13.

Notts & East Midlands VTTA 25, A25/34, Saturday 23rd September

Chris Posted 25th September 2017

Chris Lea reports: "I did great into the headwind to the turn, but was then cooked for the return. My season is coming to a natural end, it seems. I shall give this Saturday's 10 a go.... By the way, I was soundly beaten by Rachel Elliott, who did 51-57. Respect!" (You weren't the only one Chris - Ed.)

  • Chris Lea 55.03 (pictured)
  • John Martin 55.41 (season's best)
  • Steve Scott 59.18 (season's best)

Rutland CC 10, O10/1, Saturday 23rd September

Alex Deck Posted 25th September 2017

What a great event this was. Just shows what a good club can do when everyone pulls together. A positive glut of marshals and helpers plus a fantastic array of home made cakes for afterwards. Rich Witney took some brilliant photos at the turn too.

This was the penultimate event in the North Mids TT series standard carriageway comp so every second counted, especially in the men's, where Darryl Wall tied with Dan Taylor with 21.13 each and Keith Ainsworth was 3rd with 21.16. Darryl

Alex Deck won the women's with 24.42, which will nudge her closer to Ann Walsham in the standings. Exciting stuff! Everything hinges on the final event next Saturday, the VTTA 10 on the O10/16.

B&DCC Hardwick Hall HC, OHC11, Sunday 17th September

Alex Deck Posted 20th September 2017

The first thing you need to know about this is that it takes place at night, in the beautiful surroundings of Hardwick Hall. It's meant to be illuminated by spotlights but there were only about four, so most of the 615m climb was done in the dark, which definitely adds a new dimension to it. You also get a commentator, and music, which is ace. All hill climbs should be like this. Bob Cuff and Alex Deck were the only North Mids vets foolish enough to do it – Alex finished 4th woman with 2.06 and Bob did 2.12. Good fun.

Great battle between Chris Ledger and Keith Ainsworth for the 55-59 age group prize. Chris just pipped Keith by 7s. Maybe if Keith hadn't ridden the V718 the day before it would have been different! Karen was 2nd in the 40-44 age group, beaten by Liz Powell's storming ride for 4th overall.

  • 47th Chris Ledger 21.31 - 1st 55-59

Alex and Richard Dixon Posted 31st August 2017

Great day on the V718, with a few records broken. Alex Deck and Richard Dixon (Team Swift) took 43s off their national record with their 18.22 (the only time I will ever go faster than Dan Barnett!) and John Smith (aged 79) took 18s off his existing Group record. The Elmsall RC trio of Steve Scott, John Martin and Karl Caton set a new Club record of 1-02.21. Because the results were on standard I've listed them in standard order and actual:

  • 1st on standard / 1st actual tandem Alex Deck & Richard Dixon +8.29 / 18.22
  • 8th / 10th Keith Ainsworth +8.13 / 19.13

Some fantastic results for the group at the BDCA 100. Joe Le Sage in particular broke Darren Otter's 17 year club record with his ride, and Chris Melia (right), in her first 100, won the women's event and set a swathe of new records, knocking out Margaret Allen's 1989 group one. Well done people.

  • Joe Le Sage 3-46.36 – pb, Rutland Club Record and North Mids age record!
  • Daryl May 3-53.55 - pb too! Well done Daryl

RTTC 25 Championships, South Wales, 5/6th August

Chris Posted 1st August 2017

Some phenomenal times recorded on the Rhigos course this weekend in the national 25. I’m sure someone will already have done this but it’d be interesting to compare the top 10 times to those from even 5 years ago – the jump in speed since the widespread adoption of power meters and coaches really is incredible. To think the guy who came last out of 139 riders did a short 57, and the Junior events were won with a long 48 (male) and 54.51 (female).

It looks like anyone who wanted to race was there; this included Karen Ledger, Chris Ledger and Keith Ainsworth, who battled the winds and rain to finish 19th in the women's (56.27), 66th (51.02) and 84th (52.14) respectively. Well done guys.

Stop press - just been informed that Chris Ledger won his age group (55-59). Well done Chris.

Joe Paul Chris Andy Posted 1st August 2017

Joe Le Sage (top right), Paul Heggie (second top), Chris Lea (third top) and Andy Whitehead (bottom right) competed in different 12 hour events on Sunday.

Joe (44), Paul (63) and Andy (51)in the Team Swift event on the V12HR near Pocklington and Chris (55) in the Breckland one on the B12/2 in Norfolk. Sadly Andy had to stop after 9 hours, gutted for you Andy but I know you gave it everything. If you're sick you're sick.

Paul and Joe were terrific and despite problems with feeding and discomfort finished with 212m and 256m respectively (tbc). Really admirable efforts. Paul seemed remarkably chipper at the finish and may even do another!

Down in Norfolk Chris achieved his season's goal, finishing in 9th place with a fantastic 269.422 miles, not only a pb but another North Mids age record to go with the 100 he set earlier in the year. Congratulations Chris!

I understand that Chris Ledger and Daryl May were guilty of going out too fast but Chris pb'd and Daryl's ride is nothing to be ashamed of so I think I might try that approach next time. Ride of the day goes to Karen Ledger's *phenomenal* 1-51.35, a North Mids record for age 44 as well as a national one, slotting in between Lynne Taylor (now Biddulph)'s 1-51.22 age 40 and Chris Melia's 1-52.24 aged 52. Impressive stuff. The photo was taken by Phil Barnes from his GoPro camera as she passed him - wonder how long that took!

  • Chris Ledger 1-46.50 (pb)
  • Andy Newham 1-51.17
  • Karen Ledger 1-51.35 (pb and 1st woman) (right)
  • Chris Lea 1-51.47
  • Daryl May 1-53.09
  • Andy Whitehead 1-53.46
  • Alex Deck 2-01.21 (Rutland women's record)

Sheffrec CC SpoCo, O19C, 12th July

Alex Posted 13th July 2017

Good fun at the Sheffrec 19 mile hilly last night and a good showing by North Mids vets. Not-fantastically fast conditions in that there wasn't much, if any, help either way, but it could have been a lot worse. Very good ride by Darryl Wall, only 3s behind 2nd placed Andrew Whiteley of Langsetts RT.

  • 3rd Darryl Wall 44.28
  • 5th Chris Myhill 46.19
  • 6th Joe Le Sage 46.43
  • 12th Daryl May 48.37
  • 20th Dominic Watts 50.39 (course pb)

Boiling hot conditions didn't stop Karen Ledger racing to an excellent 4th place in the women's event on what was apparently an awful course (worse than Hatfield!). Well done to everyone mad enough to do such an event.

Chris Posted 11th July 2017

Good and bad news on the Newmarket course; 75% of the north mids contingent managed to get a ride before the event was cancelled due to a rider being hit by a car on the course. Luckily (?) the Thanet CC rider, Simon Henderson, was relatively ok, and was airlifted to hospital with a broken shoulder and collar bone. The remaining 25% (me) was left with yet another involuntary dns.

  • Andy Newham 52.34 (pb and Lincoln Whs record)
  • Chris Melia 4th woman (2nd on standard) with 54.58, a new North Mids age record (knocking out two of her previous ones) a national age record and pb. Not a bad day's work!
  • Richard Sheldrake 55.33

Sherwood CC 10, A10/14a, 8th July

Syd Posted 11th July 2017

Paul Mapletoft, Alan Sides and Tony Morris headed over to the A1 for a quick 10 on Saturday evening. Wish I'd entered this instead of the E2 - would have been a lot less stressful than a four hour drive and a dns.

  • Paul Mapletoft 22.15
  • Alan Sides 27.01
  • Syd Wilson (right) 27.49 (national and group age record for an 88 year old!)
  • Tony Morris 28.12

Bob Cuff was the only North Mids vet brave enought to tackle the Sheffrecc hill climb from Low to High Bradfield on Friday evening, completing the 800m course in 3m 20s, which is a very respectable time. A real achievement - well done Bob.

Merthyr CC 25, R25/3H, 2nd July

Chris Posted 3rd July 2017

An event where the top 5 all went under 50 minutes shows what a fast course this can be on the right day. Chris and Karen Ledger both returned home with pb's: Chris (9th overall) with 50.21 (a new Rutland CC record), Karen (31st overall, out of 106 riders) with 53.25,a full 2 minutes ahead of the next female rider, the not-untalented and considerably younger Anna Morris. Good riding!

Buxton CC 10, J10/1, 29th June

Alex Posted 26th June 2017

Chris Lea, Paddy Gould and Alex Deck headed out to Whaley Bridge last night for the Buxton CC 10. The J10/1 is a potentially quite fast course on the (very!) up-and-down Chapel en le Frith bypass. It just about stopped raining in time which was a relief. A slight technical hitch for Alex (no seatpost clamp) resulted in an interesting new riding position, but despite this she took 21s off the women's course record with 23.31 for the win. Really good rides by Paddy and Chris too, 21.07 and 22.19 respectively. It was a classy field, with Mark Nulty winning with 19.38, just a few secs off the course record.

Weekend of 24th / 25th June

Trevor and Paddy Posted 26th June 2017

Riders were out and about all over the place this weekend:

Trevor Mayne (top right) got an excellent 2nd at the Holmfirth CC SpoCo 10, with 23.24.

Chris Lea sounds like he raced on a farm track at the East Lancs RC 25 on the circular J2/9: "I did a middling 58, still feeling a bit sluggish after the 100. Annoyingly, the smoothest and least pot-holed sections of that course have just been surface-dressed. At least it stayed dry. No combine harvesters encountered on the A537, no queues of traffic for steam engine rallies at Astle Park, and no cows crossing Twemlow Lane." Patrick Gould (bottom right) also rode and finished with a short 56, again, to be confirmed.

Paul Mapletoft (59.49), Rob Barnard (1-01.13 course pb), Mick Lamb (1-02.19), and Tony Keyworth (1-04.22) all raced the Halifax Imperial Whs 25 in blowy conditions. Full results.

National 50, T502/3, Sunday 25th June

Chris Ledger Posted 26th June 2017

Only five North Mids vets entered this but we still managed to come away with two age category wins and a club age record. Windy conditions meant the times weren't superfast but pretty good nevertheless. Well done to:

  • Chris Ledger 1-50.34 (1st 55-59) (pictured with Sue Bowler)
  • Keith Ainsworth 1-52.15 (2nd 55-59)
  • Karen Ledger 1-56.30(1st 40-44)
  • Steve Scott 2-10.04

Bob Posted 23rd June 2017

The penultimate event in the North Mids TT SpoCo series, this race proved pivotal. Unusual conditions contributed to what I thought was a super fast night, albeit one where steamed up visors littered the side of the road and thrown at marshalls. Great ride by Joe for first vet, good effort by Bob to get under the hour, and bad luck to me for puncturing on the A6.

  • 5th Joe le Sage 46.08 (1st vet)
  • 8th Trevor Mayne 47.36
  • 11th Daryl May 47.52
  • 29th Bob Cuff 59.43 (pictured)

Common Lane Occasionals SpoCo, O12C, Wednesday 14th June

Darryl and Alex Posted 15th June 2017

Only three north mids vets entered this gruelling but mercifully short SpoCo, which runs from Barlow to Baslow (via Fox Lane) to Owler Bar and back to Holmesfield. what we didn't expect was to be joined on the startsheet by World Champions Elinor Barker, Connor Swift and Katie Archibald. That wasn't part of the plan at all. Turns out they're quite good.

Two course records later Darryl had managed a brilliant 3rd behind Connor Swift and Sam Walsham, with Chris Myhill just a second behind in 4th. I grovelled in after three World champions and Emilie Verroken, who is in great form at the moment.

  • 3rd Darryl Wall 33.32 (top right)
  • 4th Chris Myhill 33.33

Bolsover and District CC 10, O10/16, Wednesday 7th June

Alex Posted 8th June 2017

This new course between Staveley and Bolsover via Poolsbrook couldn’t have been more different – up, down, left, right, round… almost two laps meant you were constantly seeing other riders which made it a lot of fun. Some stiff competition resulted in two new course records, both set by vets which is great – Ian Guilor (not a north mids rider) 21.17 and Alex Deck with 24.24. Overall the north mids vets were really well represented:

  • 2nd Darryl Wall 21.26 (over 28mph avg, not bad on a course with 7 roundabouts!)
  • 7th Joe Le Sage 22.16 (right)
  • 8th Chris Myhill 22.22
  • 9th Alan Cooke 22.49
  • 12th Steve Hollowood 24.06
  • 13th Dominic Watts 24.08
  • 14th Alex Deck 24.24 (1st woman + course record) (top right)
  • 17th Gary Kondor 25.07
  • 19th Bob Cuff 27.55 (road bike) – new pb for Bob, well done
  • 20th John Smith 28.14

rain Posted 8th June 2017

This was grim - wind and rain, badly signposted and marshalled (2 marshalls in a 25?? Both at the turn?) - I got lost and Chris had a hideous race but nevertheless managed to win fastest women vet which was ace. No photos, so here is a pic of some rain, which is about all our view was that day.

  • Chris Melia 57.11 (1st woman vet)
  • Alex Deck DNF - (most annoyed woman vet)

Mapperley CC 10, A10/3, Saturday 27th May

Great ride by Karen (right) for fastest woman, with Ann Walsham only 49s behind her - strong ride Ann! Ditto Keith, Chris and Karl - a 21 in those conditions is great. Well done all.

Posted 11th March 2017 Richard

Richard Sheldrake (Lincoln Whs) made the epic drive down to Newmarket to ride the E2/25. Very favourable conditions resulted in a pb by 7 secs with 53.48. Congratulations Richard – good start to the season. Richard says “It was a very fast day (faster than Etwall) with 10 men riding under 48 minutes and John Dewey winning in 45.20 -the third fastest 25 ever and fastest by an amateur.” Great pic of Richard at the turn.

Birdwell Whs 10, O10/1, Saturday 8th April

Posted 10th April 2017 Paddy

It’s safe to say the Birdwell 10 didn’t run smoothly. Road works kept springing up without warning resulting in three changes of course before a 7.5m route was agreed on, then the timekeeper drove into a ditch near the start and had to be towed out. There should have been a special trophy for the organisers because they did a fantastic job under very trying circumstances. Well done Paul and Trev. At least it was sunny – and everyone pb’d!

New member Patrick Gould (Matlock CC - top right) did a fantastic ride for 2nd overall with 15.49; Chris Ledger (Rutland CC) was 9th with 16.25, Keith Ainsworth (Langsett Cycles RT) 16.36, Trevor Mayne (Birdwell Whs) 16.39, Karen Ledger (Rutland CC - right) 20th and 1st woman with an excellent 17.14;Karen I was 2nd woman with 18.03, Mick Lamb (Kiveton Park CC) 18.17, Rob Barnard (18.21), Gordon Wordsworth (Whirlow Wheelers) 35th with 19.05, Tony Keyworth (Kiveton Park CC) 36th with 19.20, Mike Weaver 44th with 20.41, John Smith (Thurcroft CC) 46th with 21.41 and Alan Sides (Rotherham Whs) bringing up the rear with 23.50.

If you’ve not seen the photos John Robert took some brilliant ones (including these two) which are on FB.

Bolsover & District CC 10, O10/5, Saturday 18th March

Steve Posted 14th March 2017

Another good event organised by Craig Devonshire (thanks Craig) - well marshalled and (amazingly) dry. As with last week, the O10/5 at Cuckney isn't a fast course but it produced some excellent rides by some new-on-the-scene-youngsters (both winners were under 23 - eek) and some almost as fast ones from the vets. Karen Ledger was beaten into 2nd place by Loughborough Uni's Anna Morris but achieved a new Rutland women's 10 record, not bad going on such a slow course. I'm sure it will be lowered very soon! New member Steve Gibson (Peak RC) was highest placed North Mids vet with 21.06 (right), with Darryl Wall a few places behind with 21.32. Good to see Darryl back on the bike after his horrible accident last year.

Once again Rob Booth was on the course with his camera and took some really great photos.

YCF 10, V910, Sunday 12th March

Paul Posted 14th March 2017

Paul Heggie, Mick Lamb, Tony Keyworth, Paul Mapletoft and Alan Sides all rode the rolling V910 on Sunday. This isn't a fast course by any stretch of the imagination and Paul Mapletoft must have had tired legs from the day before but finished fastest of the North Mids riders with 25.14. Mick Lamb was a few sec slower with 25.20, Tony Keyworth 26.30. Paul Heggie (right) did a course pb of 26.40. Alan Sides got round in 32.45 - well done Alan.

VTTA North Mids 14.7m SpoCo, O14C, Saturday 11th March

Karen Posted 14th March 2017

Our first event of the year, on a new (resurrected) course based around the Cuckney 10 course with a few hills thrown in. A really good turnout by Group members, too many to mention - and we also picked up a few new ones. Karen Ledger (right) won the Ron Blythe trophy for best Group member on standard and was fastest woman with 35.40 (+6.17). Fastest North Mids man and 2nd overall was new member Steve Gibson with 32.42.

First races of the year!

Chris and Karen Posted 3rd March 2017

Kicking off the season proper were the Sheffrec 25m 2up and the Matlock 21m hilly, both on Saturday. We had members in both and managed some really good results - a great start to the season.

A great North Mids turnout for the 2up, with Joe Le Sage, Alix Archer, Allan Wailoo, Richard Lunt, Mick Lamb and Paul Mapletoft, Andy Whitehead, Daryl May and the Ledgers (top right) all braving the legendary Hatfield wind. Chris and Karen Ledger, now riding for Rutland CC, won fastest mixed pair with a great 58-something (results not published yet but photos here.). Ann

Over at Matlock, Trevor Mayne was 12th with 1:01.33 and Ann Walsham (Maxx RT) (right) was fastest lady by a margin of almost 4 minutes with 1:09.45 - well done both.

Have updated the events page and the faq to clarify the various group competitions this year. We might have to do a bit of a trophy revamp, as some of our awards are no longer valid given how few events we are promoting this year.

Get in touch if you have any questions.
