Standards

VTTA Posted 14th Dec 2016

To encourage more people to sign up for standards we have cut the fee from £10 to a mere £5 - bargain! You can pay for them along with your subs - more info on how to do that is on our membership page.

If you still don't quite get what the mysterious world of standards is all about, I've written an article on them which should clarify it.

Karl Caton Posted 15th August 2016

Well done to Karl, Steve and John on their Elmsall RC club 10m team record of 1hr 04s. Yet another slightly disappointing ride for me on yet another windy day.

Recent bits and bobs

Alan Cooke Posted 15th August 2016

There are always a few events on less well known courses... Alan Cooke (pictured) was 11th overall with a course pb in the Weaver Valley 25 on the J4/8 and Trevor Mayne braved the ECCA 12hr event down in Cambridgeshire and covered 267 miles. Fantastic effort Trev! Chris Melia made the trip south too, for the women's national 25 and finished a brilliant 14th in a huge, top class field. Well done Chris. Paul Heggie did the Darlington CC 25 on the T254, and was fastest 60+ with 1-02.25. Great stuff Paul, what a good season you're having. Andy Newham nipped over to the darkside for the Bassettlaw triathlon and finished 16th out of 212. Oh and last but not least, Chris Wallis and John Martin rode the Stockton Whs 25 on the T252/3 and finished with 58.42 and 1-01.31 respectively.

Karl Caton Posted 15th August 2016

Memorable for many reasons, this event did produce some (genuinely) good times:

  • Karl Caton 57.33
  • Mick Lamb 1-00.15, (right) course pb, well done Mick
  • Steve Scott 1-01.07
  • Tony Keyworth 1-04.44

Keith Posted 4th August 2016

The 250 mile drive down to South Wales is becoming popular amongst riders keen to take advantage of the 6 mile 'gift' hill on this course. Four north midlanders headed south this weekend and two of them came back with pb's:

  • Keith Ainsworth (right) 51.18, pb and group age record (57) - congratulations Keith!
  • Chris Wallis 55.24
  • Steve Scott 56.02 – pb, well done Steve
  • Charles Crookes 57.20

New group 12 hour trike record for Andy Newham

Andy Newham

Andy Newham, 43, was 17th in the Team Swift 12 hour, achieving not only a group age record with his 219.581 miles (age 43), but also a Lincoln Wheelers and LRRA 12hr record. Congratulations Andy! Can't see that one being beaten for a year or two ;-)

Group 25, O25C, Saturday 30th July

Daryl Posted 4th August 2016

It was our group 25 on Saturday, bit of a thin turnout but that’s probably because people thought they were racing on the A1, or perhaps because there was an event on the 718. Rather a lot of dns’s (one of whom was the pusher off – this resulted in riders doing standing starts) but thanks to John Martin for organising and to all who helped out. Full results here.

  • Daryl May (right) 57:48
  • Graham Barker / Chris Duggleby (tandem) 1:02:31

  • John Smith 1-09:19

Team Jaden 10, V718, Saturday 30th July

Patrick Posted 4th August 2016

Those of us (ok – me) hoping to do a fast 10 on the 718 were defeated yet again by the strong westerly wind.

  • Patrick Murphy (right) 20.19 – read Patrick’s blog
  • Karl Caton 20.31
  • Karen Ledger 21.08 – just 6s off her pb
  • Steve Hollowood 21.18
  • Alex Deck 22.37 – bloody miles off her pb

We have a new Secretary

John

John Smith (Thurcroft CC) has willingly (well maybe with just a little coercion) volunteered to be our new Group Secretary. Looking forward to having you at the meetings John. Thanks very much for volunteering.

Shaftesbury CC 50, Saturday 23rd July

Chris Posted 26th July 2016

Boiling hot conditions near Cambridge resulted in some crazy fast times on this Cambridgeshire dc, pretty much everyone who made it round came home with a pb. Chris Melia went one better and not only smashed three group age records but also June Pitchfard’s national age record that has stood since 1984! Just incredible

Any event where the first two women did 30mph+ rides must have been fast, so no wonder our top women riders came out of it with national age records – well done Karen and Chris. Although actually, we’ve come to expect great rides from these two () – just as impressive was the pb ride from Alix Archer, taking 2 minutes(?) off her old one, congratulations Alix!

Well done Trev, Joe, Bill and Paul for braving the national 100 on what sounded like quite a tough day.

  • 42nd Trevor Mayne 3-56.47 (right)(especially good given that Trev rode the 10 the day before)

Mike

Mike Garvey won no fewer than three bronze medals at the British Masters National Track champs this weekend. Mike did a pb for the flying 200, another pb for the 500m time trial and finished off with yet another bronze in the 8k scratch. Very pleased with myself for my first ever major cycling champs.

Sheffrec SpoCo, O22/1, 6th July

Alex Posted 7th July 2016

Vets did well last night with Darryl Wall taking the overall win and Alex Deck taking the women’s prize in the twice re-routed Sheffrec hilly. Due to Baslow roundabout being closed off for resurfacing the race was run from the bottom of the climb up to Owler Bar and back, which was quite strange but fun. Thanks to Daryl May for sorting everything out so that the event could go ahead.

  • Darryl Wall 20.29 (1st overall)
  • Joe Le Sage 21.58

  • Paul Heggie 21.53 – pb! (right)
  • Andy Newham (trike) 22.54 - new group age record
  • John Smith 24.11 – 1s off his pb - gutted for you John
  • Mike Garvey 25.37 – fastest 10 this year for Mike

  • Chris Ledger 54.22
  • Karen Ledger 55.11 (5th woman and fastest woman vet)
  • Alex Deck 59.37

Joe Posted 5th July 2016

The general concensus for this event was "I wish we had stayed at home!!". Trevor Mayne, Keith Ainsworth, Paul Heggie and John Smith all started, but none of them finished. Trevor bonked at 35 miles (but had to ride the rest of the course just to get back to HQ) - Keith, John and Paul all decided discretion was the better part of valour and turned around after battling bravely with 20 mph crosswinds. Well done lads.

  • Ann Walsham 1-09.17 – 2nd woman, well done Ann

Change of course for group 25

We’ve had confirmation that the Group 25 on July 30th will be run on the O25C at 2pm and NOT the O25/3 at 5pm. This is due to two high traffic counts done this year. The O25C is an 8 mile circuit around Pollington and Great Heck (just south of the westbound M62), with an HQ at Whitley - details on the North Mids CTT courses page. Also, if anyone fancies a test ride, the circuit is used on Monday evenings by Featherstone RC, 7.01 pm start. More info here.

Alex on the tandem Posted 6th June 2016

First proper summer day of the year and the most popular event is cancelled before it was even half way through. North Mids VTTA managed to get a few riders safely round before the Police closed the course:

  • Alex Deck & Richard Dixon (Yorkshire district) – mixed tandem 19.05 (new national vets record)
  • Trevor Mayne - 20.05 (Trev’s third fastest 10 ever)
  • Karl Caton - 20.42 (bottom right - equalling his pb)
  • Chris Melia (22.25) and Alix Archer (24.28) both had to stop mid-race to avoid the RTA but did finish; their times were at least 40s slower than they should have been, which is gutting as they were both on for huge pbs - as it was Chris still took 5s off her old one!

Darryl was just pipped to the win this week by Simon Beldon, but he got a course pb out of it so all is not lost. Paul Heggie was 9th overall and 1st in the 55+ age group at the Yorkshire Coastal Clarion 24 on the SpoCo V733/24. Unfortunately the course was shortened by half mile due to roadworks so although Paul was 5 mins quicker than last year it wasn’t a course pb… but it would have been. Good effort Paul.

Age record for Syd Wilson

Syd Wilson Posted 6th April 2016

87 year old legendary local rider Syd Wilson (Sheffield Phoenix), set a North Mids age record for 10m at our group event in March, of 29.34. I don't think anyone took a photo of Syd on the day so I'm using this fantastic one from 1958. For info, Syd was born in October 1928....Many congratulations, Syd!

  • Gary Kondor (Sherwood Pines Cycles) 23.29

Important information regarding doping control

CTT Posted 31st March 2016

This comes from Nick Sharpe, the CTT National Secretary:

Bearing in mind the positive doping tests that affected CTT events in 2015, there will be an increase in the number of tests carried out in 2016. There will also be a campaign to raise awareness of anti-doping generally.

As part of the campaign, ideally a doping control notice should be displayed alongside the signing on sheet at all CTT events, whether or not testing is actually to take place at that event.

Testing was carried out at the RTTC Classic Series event organised by Buxton CC on Good Friday. A number of riders were selected for testing. Selection is entirely random. Testing will take place at many CTT events in 2016, and not just at the major ones. Obviously details of the events at which testing is to take place cannot be revealed in advance of the event itself.

Alex Deck Posted 31st March 2016

Bit chilly and windy on the 718 but at least it stayed dry. Bill was only 11s off his pb which bodes very well for future races; I was a minute off mine which doesn't bode quite as well! (Too early in the morning for me).

Sheffrec 2up

Ann Walsham Posted 10th March 2016

It came as no suprise that the Sheffrec CC 2up was held on a freezing, wet and windy day at - yes! Hatfield Woodhouse. You'd think these hideous conditions would slow some people down (they did me) but the event was won by Simon Beldon & Andy Jackson in 52.18. Chris Melia (Born to Bike) and Alex Deck (Langsett Cycles) won the women's and Chris and Karen Ledger (Langsett Cycles) won the mixed. Good day for the vets:

Standards medals

The Veteran Posted 29th January 2016

Apologies that the standards medals have taken so long to arrive but they are finally here. Don't blame us - they come from National Committee so we just have to wait for them to materialise. Worth it though - they are really nice, a good size and weight. Those of you waiting patiently should be receiving them very shortly.
